A Pair of Cuba-Destined Humanitarian Vessels Declared Unaccounted For after Departing Mexican Waters.
A large-scale search and rescue effort is presently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for two lost boats transporting relief goods en route from the Mexican coast to Havana.
Maritime Search and Rescue Efforts Initiated
Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval assets and military search aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting at least nine personnel, per a navy statement.
The ships had been expected to reach Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their docking, the navy said.
The Situation of Aid to Cuba
The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country struggles through multiple national electricity failures.
"Both captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are outfitted with suitable navigational gear and emergency beacons," a representative involved in the effort stated.
The nine individuals on board are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.
"Our team is working closely with the officials and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.
Earlier Relief Delivery
Just days before, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had transported 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the country.
That ship, nicknamed "a new Granma" following the name of the yacht in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, drugs, formula milk, bicycles and foodstuffs.
Wider International Context
Charity groups and individuals have primarily led attempts to bring essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the island nation came into effect.
International organizations have since warned of ""critical" shortages of supplies, with over 50,000 surgeries cancelled in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Political measures have intensified lately, with remarks from various officials underscoring the delicate state of diplomatic ties.
Responding to previous comments, a senior government figure declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations had begun, although their current progress remains unclear.
The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to find the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the crews.
At this time, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
