An Story of Surprising Generosity: The Time a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor
During 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to book lodging after getting there, however upon reaching the city, a major event was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.
Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of bed down in the airport – but quickly found the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open 24 hours. Not knowing how to proceed and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on a city-bound bus and began walking near a gaming venue, thinking I might spend the night somewhere that was open through the night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for acing an interview the next morning, but as a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
It seems I seemed lost because a young woman saw me wandering around the city and wondered whether I needed help. I shared my situation and immediately she suggested I could sleep on the floor of her dormitory at the Australian National University – which was perfect, considering that was where my interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided some food: one stuffed baguettes she had from her part-time job. This gave me a hot shower and a secure location and secure to sleep.
Looking back, I can appreciate the enormous leap of faith she took being a woman letting a man who was a complete stranger crash at her place. At that time I was in a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she took that chance – and remain incredibly thankful.
I didn’t end up attending that university, and I never saw the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish the universe has returned her good deed tenfold. We could all use more folks with such compassion.
