As Swimmers Escaped Attack, Widely-Shared Picture Captures Lifeguard Running ‘Full Speed’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, views the iconic beach as her back yard. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, along with numerous others in the area, detected cracking sounds ringing out across the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching states. She left her residence, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw told her something was wrong.

While standing on the street, speaking to a couple who had run up the hill soaked, she heard someone coming up behind her. It was a rescuer, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. It was just him running in the opposite way that all the others was trying to escape from, carrying that large equipment and without footwear … He’s running at something that surely every fibre in your being would signal you to move in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully full throttle sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Courage Amidst Chaos

The photograph taken by Ching of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous moments of valour in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, police and paramedics attending to dozens of the injured.

Local Response and Assistance

Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the beach facility next to the location of the attack transforming into a makeshift treatment center. Accounts show that other team members were also seen responding bravely, such as rushing into the ocean to rescue people in distress.

After the attack, messages of appreciation flooded in. One post conveyed thanks for the individuals who demonstrated that “compassion will always overcome hatred”.

The squad of rescuers issued a statement, explaining they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your kind words and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the care directed at our responders,” the team commented. “When ready, we will share our stories in the aim that it helps those impacted.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many professional lifeguards, remarked that the team acted heroically from the second the violence commenced through to late that night.

“There have been so many powerful accounts, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is remarkable,” stated a mayor.

“These individuals exhibit altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous beaches protected for visitors, but what we saw on that evening should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and process the atrocity of this heinous tragedy, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much light we have seen in the midst of such evil.”
