British and Scottish government Authorities Disagree Over Footing the £24.5 million Cost for Donald Trump and Vance Visits
The British administration is being called upon to "step up" and reimburse the £24.5 million expense incurred during recent visits by Donald Trump and Vice-President Vance to the Scottish nation, according to a senior Scottish minister.
Significant Estimated Expenses Revealed
Provisional expenses amounting to nearly £24.5 million for the pair of official trips have been published by the Scottish government.
Public Finance Minister McKee labeled the UK government's refusal to provide funding as "absurd," stating that both visits were obviously official, noting that the US president held discussions with European Union chief the EU's von der Leyen and British PM Sir Keir Starmer during his July visit in the northern nation.
Details of the Visits and Associated Policing Costs
Donald Trump toured his golfing resorts at Turnberry and Menie in Aberdeenshire over a week-long period in July, while US vice-president Vance spent around a long weekend in Ayrshire in August.
In a formal letter to the Treasury minister James Murray, Finance Secretary Shona Robison stated that the trips placed "substantial operational and financial burdens on public services in Scotland, especially the Scottish police force."
The Scottish government calculates that the estimated expense for securing the president's trip alone was £21 million, which involved peak daily deployments of more than 4,000 officers, while expenses for the VP's visit were about £3 million.
Complex Policing Operation
This extensive security mission was the biggest in the country since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, and included local officers, national divisions, volunteer officers and officers from across the UK for expert assistance.
The Finance Secretary stated: "Following your choice not to provide funding to the Scottish government for expenses accrued in relation to the trip of Donald Trump to the nation in July 2025 and the following visit of VP Vance, I am writing you to request that you reconsider this decision and provide complete repayment for the expense of the trips."
Westminster Response and Previous Example
The British administration maintained that the trips were personal and "not part of official government duties." A spokesperson commented: "The Scottish government are responsible for security expenses in Scotland as per established funding agreements for devolved matters."
While the Finance Secretary referenced past instances where the British administration reimbursed the expense of the president's 2018 trip to Scotland, it is understood that trip followed a formal UK government invitation, in which instance it included security costs under its statement of funding policy.
"The UK government needs to step up and cover the cost. I think it’s unreasonable, it was obviously a official trip … Particularly when you have the PM Sir Keir meeting with Donald Trump, having press conferences with him, engaging in international business with them, its really hard to believe to say this was just a personal vacation."
