Crew Member Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
