Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Gunbattle at Nigerian School
Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The armed faction breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The armed individuals "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.
A school employee was lost their life while safeguarding the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.
Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.
Community members disclosed to media that the armed men then led a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.
