Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his plan to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, even after months of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism

Just last month, the mayor had lashed out at the former governor, calling him a “snake and a liar” and accusing him of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a recent statement, Adams changed his position, stating he now plans to support Cuomo in communities where he maintains strong support.

“It's essential to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have been affected by gentrification on how critical this race is,” the mayor commented.

He added, “They have watched their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been ignored in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has made headlines globally and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.

During a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa declared they would reject the mayor's support if offered.

Earlier this year, the mayor had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after facing legal accusations which were later dropped in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across New York City.

During a separate media briefing on the same day, Adams answered journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”

The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place immediately following a contentious mayoral debate.
