Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
