Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 people perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.
The victims are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who are known at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
