People have come together across the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.

The assault saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel answered by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled official commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of people killed in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to examine the provisions of the plan.

A senior representative familiar with the discussions revealed that an late session of indirect talks started at evening in Egypt.

The representative said the day's discussions concluded without significant progress, due to disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.

He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are working hard to reduce the gaps between the two sides.

Essential Issues in Discussions

  • A permanent halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies distribution
  • Post-war governance of the area

Citizen Reaction

In Tel Aviv's public square previously, young Hagar - whose brother survived the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere appears as home now and until each abducted person come back no one will have peace of mind."

"After we see everybody home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to recover," she added.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel says nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.

Demonstrator a participant stated: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the abducted to come back home. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."

Surveys now consistently show that about seventy percent of the population desire the hostilities to conclude in return for the freedom of the hostages.

Gaza Situation

At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to pay their respects.

From there, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli bombardment carried on.

In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"Once the dusk comes, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, described.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, especially my little child who puts his face on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had taken in the corpses of six people by the afternoon, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
