The sport of boxing is in a significant decline this season, with limited compelling matchups and far less thrilling fights than usual. The possibility of a serious and intriguing heavyweight battle between Parker and Wardley at the London's O₂ Arena offers a welcome respite to the challenged industry. Wardley, a former white-collar slugger, who only took up boxing when he was 20 years old, had no amateur boxing history and has consistently faced doubts about his comparatively limited skills. But he is equally near to a world title challenge.

“This is the most significant fight, right now, in the heavyweight class. These two boxers have stepped up when neither one was required to take this bout. Joe Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have previously mandated the champion to fight him, but he was hurt. Parker wants to fight anyway.

“Fabio is similarly well-placed and he could have just waited for his opportunity. He said ‘I refuse.’ He desired to compete – and versus Parker because it offers him an opportunity to jump the queue.”

“He has been going around the block for a long time, with a lot of fights on his record. Certainly not is he an aged fighter but he has been in the boxing world for a while and had numerous grueling matches. I too have faced intense battles and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a lot more of those fights than I have.”

But the suspicion remains that Parker will be too seasoned, and too technically proficient, for Wardley. He is expected to triumph a grueling encounter with the conviction that he is next in line for a title shot against Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a clear gap.
