Qatar's Sprint Race and Main Event Grid Setting: Real-Time Coverage

Introduction

The author is about to begin to cover this day's sprint race (14:00 GMT) and qualifying (18:00 GMT).

Current Events

Formation Lap Time

The formation lap is underway.

Track Information

We have nineteen laps of the longest circuit in Formula 1, David Croft points out.

Countdown

The last moments is underway.

Driver Situation

One point in Verstappen's favour: his teammate Yuki Tsunoda is ahead of him by a single position. It's improbable to challenge Red Bull's main man.

Interview Updates

Sky speaking with Sky currently: the analyst is at the Mercedes team.

Karun Chandhok is jumping ahead to the 2026 season, interviewing Adrian Newey about his stepping up to the team team principal.

Grid Details

There are only sixteen vehicles on the grid. It was another poor grid-setting session for Lewis Hamilton: after coming 20th and last in the previous race, resulting in an eighth-place finish in the grand prix, he did not manage to advance of Q1 again on the previous day. The team have as a result adjusted to his car configuration and so he begins from the starting area.

Aston Martin's Stroll and the Alpine duo of Gasly and Franco Colapinto are all doing likewise.

Racer Statements

"We'll use the learning for tomorrow," states Isack Hadjar, 11th on the grid. There will be plenty of learning.

Team Standings

The focus isn't solely on the individual championship: McLaren have run away with the team championship but Mercedes, with a forty-point advantage over Red Bull, will be hoping to seal second place this weekend. George Russell can assist in this goal from second place, and Antonelli will begin immediately after Verstappen.

Past Performance

Piastri won that day – as he managed the previous season, too. The driver from McLaren is going for a hat-trick.

Sprint Race Value

Alright, just over 20 minutes remaining till the sprint race begins. Unless something goes wrong, its main importance is as a preview of future events, rather than significant in its own right, with only eight points awarded to the winner. Mind you, the runner-up spot here was enough for the driver to claim the title in a prior season.
