Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
