The English Team to Launch the European Championship 2028 Journey at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
The English squad will embark on their UEFA Euro 2028 journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, provided that they secure the expected qualification for a competition taking place in the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.
City’s stadium has not hosted an English men’s game since May 2016, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is highly likely to welcome the national team for their first match on Saturday 10 June 2028.
The team are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, if they top Group B, their round of 16 match would occur at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean starting the playoffs at Everton’s ground.
Championship Opening and Rally
The event was launched at an ceremony in a London landmark on Wednesday night. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the host FAs were heckled as they entered the site by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who called for Israel to be kicked out from global football because of the situation in Gaza.
Placards were displayed with phrases stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Fixture List
The opening game of Euro 2028 will be held at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will feature the Welsh team if they qualify.
Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be staged on a Sunday in July 2028 with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.
It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will cater to families and help engage a broader range of audiences.
Participating Countries
The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Dublin Arena and Scotland would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will take part in the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be set aside for any that miss out on the finals through the qualification path.
Locations and Elimination Phase
Villa Park and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals played at the national stadium of each host.
The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in Belfast, which was excluded as a host city last year when it became clear the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.
Official Statement
“The event will be a tournament for the fans and a showcase of everything we love about the sport – its fervor and ability to bring people together.”
In excess of three million passes, a all-time high for a UEFA European Championship, are anticipated to be made available to attendees.
