The Fifth Toy Story Film Teaser Pits Woody and Buzz Against a Tablet Computer

It has been 30 years since the first Toy Story film debuted, launching the animation giant as a major film company and bringing audiences to beloved characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.

In 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a glimpse into the storyline but leaving fans curious how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang

The preview reveals the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a latest toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer avoids is what Woody is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping giveaway items find good homes.

Surely, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have come back with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was pass his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip shows the badge pinned to her shirt.

Hopefully she is remains the key figure among the group.

Toy Story 5 debuts on the scheduled date.
