The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl containing multiple human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate church.
A World of Individual Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
