The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
