We are checking images and video posted earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location of where the images were from relied on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
