Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'New Era' for New York City in First Speech
In a initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his term.
An Unprecedented Figure
The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.
Defying suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”
Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.
The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.
A Costly Blueprint
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:
- Universal childcare
- No-cost bus transit
- A rent freeze for about 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing External Headwinds
The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.
Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.
The Basic Tests of Leadership

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.
As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
